Caltech jazz bands play Stan Kenton

Here's where Cleo and I went Friday night. …

Stan Kenton graduated from Bell High School 30 years before I did. That was probably one reason that as a teenager I began listening to his music. I put this Caltech concert on my calendar when it was announced in the Pasadena Star News last week. Hugh's trumpet teacher Bill Bing was conducting one of the bands–the Thursday Night Jazz Band (see the program). Bill teaches music at Caltech and plays the trumpet professionally.

It turned out that Cleo's John Muir High School classmate John Ancona was playing saxophone, her former school mate Chris Carman was playing trombone, and the father of one of her other classmates was also playing the saxophone–all in the Monday Night Jazz Band (see the program). So Cleo wanted to go too. The audience filled the Beckman Auditorium at Caltech, mostly older folk.

Okay, so I fell down sliding on some slippery gravel in place from some Caltech construction as we took the wrong detour from our parking lot to the auditorium. It was potentially embarrassing, but only Cleo was there and no was harm done.

The performances were good, punctuated by commentary from Kenton expert Steven Harris. Sorry you missed it, Hugh. Here's the program:
